Test-day models for South African dairy cattle for participation in international evaluations

چکیده
Variance components and breeding values of production traits and somatic cell score of South African Guernsey, Ayrshire, Holstein and Jersey breeds have been estimated using a multi-lactation repeatability test-day model, including tests of the first three lactations as repeated measures and fitting the permanent environmental effect across lactations. Multitrait evaluations were done for the production traits (milk, butterfat and protein) and single trait evaluations for somatic cell score. Heritability estimates were comparable with yield and somatic cell score estimates obtained by test-day models from other countries (17-24% for milk yield; 10-13% for butterfat yield; 14-19% for protein yield and 6-8% for somatic cell score). Proofs of qualifying sires were sent to the International Bull Evaluation Service (INTERBULL) for participation in the March 2005 test runs. Genetic correlations between South Africa and other participating countries, estimated by INTERBULL, compared well with those amongst the other participating countries. Trend validation tests were successful using this methodology for all traits and breeds except for somatic cell score of the Guernsey breed, due to insufficient data for this trait. South Africa can now participate in routine INTERBULL evaluations to obtain Multiple Across Country Evaluation (MACE) breeding values, using this methodology. _______________________________________________________________________________________

متن کاملParallel computing applied to breeding value estimation in dairy cattle.
Continuous genetic evaluation of dairy cattle with test-day models is desired in Finland. However, the computing time for the genetic evaluation is 4 d and exceeds the minimum of a weekend. Three parallel implementations of the preconditioned conjugate gradient iterative solver were programmed and compared to identify the best strategy for solving mixed model equations using parallel computing....
متن کاملAnalysis of Test Day Milk Yield by Random Regression Models and Evaluation of Persistency in Iranian Dairy Cows
Variace / covariance components of 227118 first lactaiom test-day milk yield records belonged to 31258 Iranian Holstein cows were estimated using nine random regression models. Afterwards, different measures of persistency based on estimation breeding value were evaluated. Three functions were used to adjust fixed lactation curve: Ali and Schaeffer (AS), quadratic (LE3) and cubic (LE4) order of...
متن کاملInternational trends in genetic evaluation of functional traits in dairy cattle
unctional traits have become increasingly important in the dairy cattle industry due to ncreased costs of production relative to milk prices. This has instigated recording of unctional traits to be used for both management and breeding purposes. Although economic alues differ between countries, the emphasis for functional relative to production traits have ncreased throughout the western world ...
متن کاملEstimates of Repeatability and Heritability of Productive Trait in Holstein Dairy Cattle
Dairy cattle breeding programs have been based in the selection for traits related to milk production. In this research a data set of 63 herds of East Azerbaijan province Holstein cattle, collected during 2002-2013 by the Iranian Animal Breeding Center was used to estimate the repeatability and heritability of three traits of economic importance. Genetic parameters for first three lactations of...
